Heavenly Heights (words and music by Dave Stoops, as interpreted by the Quags) Look at those holy rolls and a revelation grandiose Solace from the strength of Job patron saint of the Varicose Dressed up! She’s a Destitute Delight Gilded gloves, bourbon over ice Choir begins to wail and shake Icing on the cake keeps the flock away Wavering she finds her faith Who can heal the head when the heart still aches? Dressed up! She’s a Destitute Delight Gilded gloves, bourbon over ice Blessed up! By the vespers of the night To Heavenly Heights! She sits spell bounded for another round and round and round Dressed up! She’s a Destitute Delight…

Release Me 03:24
Release me So this is it So there’s a heaven after all And you can feel the love beneath your feat It’s like you’re dancing on the air But I don’t understand why you torment that man Awaiting parole for his soul When you gonna release me from this hell When you gonna let me be myself Well shut up and close your eyes You've been keeping us up all night Pretend you're out there at the twilight …carefree Yeah this is it, yeah there’s a heaven after all And there’s a nice array of drugs to take and there’s a lot of hearts to break now she wait at the gates for her chance to escape the prisoner of paradise When you gonna release me from this hell When you gonna let me be myself When you shake those shackled hips Through the dungeon walls you slip You'll be out there in the twilight, care free! When you gonna release me from this hell When you gonna let me be myself Today we’ve awoken to find the cell open And they were both out there walking hand and hand in the air

Bergen Pines 03:20
Bergen Pines Walking dogs in the park with the emotionally disturbed Discussing the world and the price of pot in the quiet suburb The fading tattoos on wrinkled skin read: “the devil may care, But we don’t give a dam, we’re beyond loneliness and despair” Have You Ever Crossed the Borderline Between Reality and Bergen Pines From shopping malls with waterfalls To flickering florescent lights Suburban Sweet Hearts never say goodbye I ended up here cause some one slipped me some LSD I could have been a contender in the music making industry Now I’m sailing the seas on a drug-induced tranquil dinghy I’m hearing my songs being sung in a far out alien key Hopping up and down the borderline Between Reality And Bergen Pines From shopping malls to padded walls It could happen to anyone Suburban Sweet Hearts forever on the run Half verse with chorus break and sirens Now I’m singing my songs with my love from the loony bin Packing the house at every place that we perform in We made our way across the borderline Between reality and Bergen Pines From padded walls to music halls It happens all the time Suburban Sweet Hearts, Escape from Bergen Pines Suburban Sweet Hearts Never Say Goodbye!

So Much More 03:23
So Much More If I could write a song of love, I'd dedicate it to all of you! Life is too short to be holding a grudge - Over a different point of view! I had a real good high -You asked me to explain who I am How long? How long? How long, until you become? So much more! Who is that in the mirror? I don't recognize you either… We're so much more than a reflection All the little things add up! Beyond what you bargained for! What does it take to fill the cup! To even out the score! No amount of flesh would be worth the world and its troubles! How much? How much? How much is enough? So much more Who is that in the mirror? I don't recognize you either We're so much more than a reflection… If you got some time to kill, won't you please enjoy yourself? Because if you don't nobody will, and the consequences felt On the hamster wheel of life you ain't going nowhere How many laps until you collapse without any Medicare? You never really know - It could be tonight or tomorrow - Come on! come on! come on! And realize we're So much more Who is that in the mirror? I don't recognize You either We're so much more than a reflection Love You So Much More!

Another Moment In Time Another day above the ground to be grateful for A lover’s arms reaching out for something a little more Is this a real love sent from heaven above I sometimes feel I’m being sucked down through the floor Someday all this will be forgotten history And something’s will never jive This is the malady, this is humanity may our Love survive Another Moment In Time Come on let’s dance, dig the sounds and groove to the guitar strum Our hearts are beating right in time with the slap on the bongo drums I think of time travel a lot And a lost forget me not Are we who we thought we would become? Someday all this will be forgotten history Some things will never jive This is the malady, this is humanity may our Love survive Another Moment In Time Another day above the ground to be grateful for The sun it shines behind the clouds I’m hopeful we can score Imagine You and Me on drugs Making love on a bearskin rug I don’t believe that’s something we have done before Someday all this will be forgotten history Something’s will never jive This is the malady, this is humanity may our Love survive Another Moment In Time In time… In time…

All in a days work All In A Days Work For what money can’t buy Tell me is it really worth all the time gone by Everyday I punch the clock Everyday it knocks me out Is it worth the time just to pay the rent? When by the end of the week you’re already spent All in a days work for what we could not afford Baby knows how much it’s worth to be so adored No one needs to let you know How to fix your broken heart Only in your dreams Can you be apart? That only in our dreams Are we truly free Awe Everyday I bust my balls Everyday it breaks my heart Only in our dreams Can we be a part That only in our dreams Are we truly free Awe All in a days work All in a daze… work All in a days work All in a daze… work

Enough Already All the Love I have for you can’t be denied Can’t be dismissed or compromised Go have a good time get wined and dined You might be in for a big surprise All my heart all my soul Everything that means anything at all Enough Already All the doomsayers don’t get me down Don’t let those monsters make you cry They make a fortune making people frown I never pay them any mind All my Love all my dreams Anything that means anything to me Enough Already All that they can take away Will decay eventually Our Love will burn beyond eternity All the predictions of the troubled troubadour May never see the light of day All the grief you hold me accountable for You can hang it out for the birds of prey All my heart, all my soul Everything that meant anything at all Enough Already All my Love, all my dreams Everything that meant anything to me That’s enough already That’s enough!

The Last Christmas People shopping for each other on with the Christmas race People fighting one another over a parking space And people have the nerve to pass by me and mock As I spend my Christmas in a cardboard box Whiskey warms a winter’s day I don’t care what people say I just wish they’d stop and think and join in with the tune I sing Have yourself a happy holiday Another year has melted away Pour yourself another glass This could be your last Christmas Tis the time to be kind So throw me your spare change So I can buy a cheap high, And make the scenery change But you’ll just pass by me and chide and mock As I spend my Christmas in a cardboard box Whiskey warms a winters day I don’t care what people say I just wish they’d stop and think and join in with the tune I sing Have yourself a happy holiday Another year has melted away Pour yourself another glass This could be your last Christmas I just sit here with my friends Smoking cigarette ends We just party cause who needs sorrow When there’s no tomorrow How’s about another round? Before Babylon’s walls come down Everybody raise your glass Three cheers for the Last Christmas…

about

The Quags Another Moment In Time

They ain’t pretty boys, but boy they kick it pretty hard.

The Quags are one of the only bands I’m aware of whose ranks have included a James Beard Award-winning chef on bass, but that’s neither here nor there. As led by Portland songwriter, guitarist, and singer Dennis Mitchell, The Quags are rugged and dependable like your favorite four wheel-drive vehicle—dented and caked in road grime, but starts up every time.

Dependability becomes a bigger factor in our lives as we continue to age disgracefully, still fearlessly shoveling coal into our furnace of hopes and dreams. Mitchell’s worn wisdom burns brightly on top-shelf janglers like “So Much More,” in which he bites off the brusque observation, “On the hamster wheel of life/You ain’t going nowhere/How many laps/Until you collapse?”

When it comes to song styling, Mitchell is a learned surgeon capable of intricate gene-splicing between various British Invaders and the entire skinny tie Power Population, a combination that proves especially potent on the bad-trip memory “Bergen Pines.”

On “All In A Day’s Work” Mitchell muses over love and ambition and how hard it is to achieve either one, especially if you’re Johnny Punchclock. Hey, we’ve all been there!

The title track is a typically intricate knot of irresistible herk-and-jerk with lyrics that zoom randomly in and out of relationship focus. Album opener “Heavenly Heights” (penned by local songwriter Dave Stoops) starts out like a greasy garage nugget before getting all Anglophile with a dash of Small Faces-like tripping whimsy.

“Another malady, this is humanity, may our love survive,” Mitchell sings in “Another Moment In Time.” In the context of the song, he’s unpacking another doomed affair, but at the same time he knows it’s just another day above ground, and this sort of thing happens all the time. With age comes lonely wisdom.

Despite the soul-sick times we live in, The Quags soldier on as true romantics that take a licking but keep on kicking. Underneath the faded leather and scar tissue, their rock ’n’ roll heart is in great shape.
